Hello!

My name is Janene Campbell

I am an editor, writer, and content creator located in Toronto, Ontario. I founded The Plot Thickens because I want to help empower writers to execute their artistic vision and create stories they are proud of.

A little bit about me...

Though I currently define myself as a writer and editor, writing wasn’t always a skill that came naturally to me. It was really my love of storytelling that motivated me to hone my craft. I’m drawn to the ways in which stories unfold through all sorts of mediums, such as music, photography, art, fashion, and even food. However, I believe there is something innately special about the written word. It fascinates me how much one can learn about themselves and the world around them through literature. I am passionate about writing, editing, and content creation because it gives me the opportunity to connect with others through the art of storytelling.

My Educational Background

2024-2025

Editorial Skills Certificate
George Brown College

Completing the Editorial Skills Certificate Program helped refine my skills as an editor through courses such as: Editing Fundamentals, Grammar for Editors and Writers, Structural and Stylistic Editing, Creating Accessible Documents, Copy Editing, Editing Web Content, and Proofreading.

2021-2022

Master of Arts in Creative Writing
University of Roehampton London

Pursuing an MA in Creative Writing at the University of Roehampton London enabled me to tap into both the artistic and technical side of writing, namely through creating and editing my own work, participating in workshops with peers and professors, and crafting my dissertation.

2016-2020

Bachelor of Arts in English Literature
Trent University

The foundational knowledge I gained while studying English Literature at Trent University continues to nurture my desire to explore the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary literature. Throughout my degree I was exposed to a wide range of genres, mediums, and time periods of literature which encouraged me to think critically and read diversely.

Some fun facts!

IMG_0708.jpg

I gravitate towards standalone novels over series, although I have definitely been hooked by series before!

The book that ignited my passion for creative writing was "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern.

Fall and summer are my favourite seasons.

I love nature and feel most at home by a lake!

Paperbacks over hardcovers any day!

I prefer TV shows over movies because I feel like I can become more invested in the characters and ongoing storylines over a season.

I currently volunteer as a copyeditor for Ripple Foundation, a charity which empowers Canada's youth through creative literacy.

I am working on two of my own manuscripts at the moment, a Young Adult ghost story and a contemporary romance.

While writing, I listen to one song on repeat to get into my character's headspace.

My Favourite Genres:

Contemporary fiction

Literary fiction

Romance

Magical Realism

Fantasy

Romantasy

Mystery/Horror

(Really anything under the sun!)

My Most Recent Read:

"Half His Age" by Jennette McCurdy.
